The mean intake in the elderly between 50 and 80 years of age has been reported to be 9.06 mg per day which is 69% of the recommended daily allowance. Zinc appears to be effective in taste disorders only with low zinc concentrations. Elemental zinc supplementation in daily doses of 25 to 100 mg per day by mouth appears to be beneficial in taste disorders secondary to zinc depletion" .
